The Automated Technology Group (ATG) is a leading global supplier of control and power solutions for industrial automation. Through the design, installation and support of dynamic solutions for power, automation and process control, ATG drives the production lines, supply chains and service delivery of many leading companies.

OVERVIEW

The Automated Technology Group (ATG), was awarded the majority of the body in white project for the Model 3 Tesla. Based in California, USA, this was ATG’s largest project to date in North America.

On recommendation from their customers, ATG engaged us to supply PLC and Robot Programmers.

UNDERSTANDING THEIR NEEDS

We began supporting ATG in the February, shortly after they were awarded the Controls contract. This required direct sourcing of over 40 PLC and Robot Programmers, plus the provision of visa support and payrolling for their established contractors. This was the start of a successful, long-term working relationship between the STR Group (Talos parent company) and ATG.

To ensure the smooth running of ATG’s project, we put together a strategic plan, which needed to be implemented 3 months before the Engineers were required to arrive on-site in California. The plan was put in place to ensure that the right high-quality engineers were sourced, screened, placed and granted visas before deployment.

IDENTIFYING THE CHALLENGES

The main challenges in the process were:

Multiple niche-skill hires

Identification and attraction of more than 40 PLC and Robot Programmers in a relatively short space of time

Visa support

Ensuring that all contractors had the right visas and other documentation required to work in the US, including keeping up-to-date with renewals

Contractor management

As well as appropriate visas, contractors would need to be accommodated, provided with transport, and rotations scheduled

CLIENT'S AIMS

ATG needed to source an entire team of specialist automation engineers to fulfil the Tesla project requirements. Their objectives were to:

Target highly experienced, qualified contractors willing to relocate to California

Outsource onboarding elements such as arranging visas and sourcing and negotiating local accommodation and car hire

Ensure fully compliant contractor payrolling throughout the project

OUR BESPOKE STAFFING SOLUTION

To achieve a successful campaign, we worked closely with ATG’s Technical Director, Controls Manager and Senior Project Managers throughout the entire length of the contract.

Due to the high volume of requirements for this project, we invested in additional support and hired a dedicated Compliance Officer. Their sole responsibility was to provide support to our Account Manager by managing the compliance of all of the contractors deployed on-site.

We managed the entire post-recruitment process including processing contractor timesheets and expenses, and sourcing and negotiating local accommodation and car hire. We also held weekly conferences with the Project Management team to organise rotations home and visa renewals.

Contractors were paid weekly and we provided ATG with one consolidated monthly invoice. This reduced administration time and ensured a quick and efficient process for both the client and contractors.

All the above, coupled with our in-depth understanding of the industry, visa process and compliance knowledge, plus our strong, extensive network of engineers, enabled us to successfully deliver this project to our client, allowing them to fulfil their contract with Tesla.
