At Talos Automation, people are at the heart of everything we do, from connecting top engineering talent with innovative automation businesses, to building a supportive and forward-thinking team of our own.
This autumn, we’re thrilled to welcome three new faces to the Talos team, all bringing unique experience, fresh perspectives, and a shared passion for the world of automation and robotics. We caught up with our newest team members to learn more about their journeys into recruitment, what excites them about the automation space, and how they’re helping shape the future of talent at Talos.
Welcome, Charlie, Eva and Sarah!
Let’s start at the beginning: what first drew you to a career in recruitment, and how did that path lead you to Talos Automation?
Charlie: My background is quite different; I spent 12 years working with children and young people, from mainstream and SEN schools to residential homes. Eventually, I wanted a change but wasn’t sure where to start. Friends suggested recruitment because I love working with people, and when I came across STR Group and Talos, I was drawn to their focus on training and supportive culture rather than just years of experience.
Sarah: For me, I wanted a role that made a difference but also offered growth. I knew I enjoyed phone time and teamwork, so when I found STR Group and saw what Talos offered, a close-knit team with opportunities to learn, it just clicked.
The automation industry is evolving fast. What excites you most about recruiting in this space?
Charlie: Absolutely. Automation is at the heart of global transformation. AI, IoT, and data-driven systems are reshaping how industries operate. It’s exciting to play a part in that shift.
Eva: And it’s global. From healthcare to logistics, there’s such demand for STEM talent. The mix of start-ups and established innovators across Europe and Asia makes it a dynamic space to recruit in.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face when recruiting for automation and robotics roles, and how do you overcome them?
Charlie: I agree. Skilled PLC programmers and robotics engineers are in high demand and often have multiple offers. Building lasting relationships helps ensure I match them to the right roles, not just any role.
Sarah: Candidates often juggle several offers, so consistent communication and genuine connection make a big difference. It’s how you stand out as a recruiter.
What role do you think recruitment teams can play in promoting greater diversity across the industry?
Eva: Exactly. Small changes like reviewing job descriptions for inclusive language or anonymising CVs can make a big impact. Educating clients is key too; when they see the value of diverse teams, everyone wins.
Sarah: For me, it’s about seeing beyond the CV. Conversations reveal potential you might otherwise miss.
What has stood out to you most about the Talos culture, and how does it support your growth as a recruiter?
Charlie: Coming from a completely different background, I was nervous, but the transition has been so smooth. Everyone’s approachable, ideas are encouraged, and even small wins are celebrated.
Eva: The collaboration stands out. We share candidate and client details to help each other succeed, and we have fun, too! Office cricket and darts during lunch keep things lively.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not matching candidates with opportunities?
Sarah: I’m a bit of a travel lover too! I spent the first half of this year travelling Southeast Asia and Australia and I am always looking to book my next holiday. Spending time with friends and family is my favourite way to unwind.
Charlie: Family time is everything to me. We do dinners, games nights, and trips to see relatives. I also enjoy painting; I’m not great at it, but it’s relaxing, and I love live music.
Finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering a career in recruitment?
Eva: Don’t be intimidated by numbers or targets. Focus on people, conversations, and learning; the results will follow. It’s hard work, but what you put in, you get out.
Sarah: Persistence is everything. Rejection happens, but the key is to keep going and learn from every experience.
