Talos Automation is proud to partner with contractors whose careers showcase not only technical excellence but also resilience, adaptability and a commitment to lifelong learning. Many of these individuals have built international careers, leaving their mark on projects across the globe while remaining part of the Talos family for years.
In this third instalment of our ‘Spotlight on…’ series, Grant Horsham speaks with William Maim, an Automation Engineer from Brazil with more than two decades of experience in automation. William shared how contracting has shaped his career, the challenges he’s overcome, and the lessons he’s learned about leadership and collaboration along the way.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
How did you get into contracting, and what attracted you to it?
That challenge pushed me to constantly develop, to stay curious, and to keep learning. Contracting gave me that opportunity; it allowed me to test myself in new environments while continuing to grow as an engineer and as a person.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a long-term contractor?
The only way to succeed in this lifestyle is with a partner who fully understands the nature of the job; someone confident enough to handle the distance and the demands that come with it. Together with strong personal principles, that creates a bond that goes beyond words. It’s what makes the sacrifices worthwhile.
How many contracts have you worked on with Talos?
Is there a project you’re especially proud of?
It was my first project as a PLC Lead, and it completely changed my perspective. Until then, I had been focused mainly on doing the work myself, but stepping into a leadership role required a different mindset. I learned that leading is not so much about doing but supporting others to achieve goals.
That experience taught me that leadership is a daily mission. It requires patience, understanding, and the ability to guide others toward success. It was a turning point in my career.
How has your experience with Talos and Grant been?
His role comes with challenges that go far beyond customer relations; it’s also about working with people. None of us are robots, even if some might think so, and being human adds complexity to every interaction. Talos and Grant understand that. They recognize the importance of empathy and respect in every relationship.
What sets Talos apart is its breadth of experience across industries, and they don’t just provide technical solutions, they care for the people delivering them. That makes a big difference when you’re out in the field, often far from home.
Celebrating growth and leadership
At Talos, we’re proud to work with contractors like William who not only deliver excellence but also bring out the best in those around them. Their stories inspire us to continue connecting people with opportunities that help shape the future of automation.
