At Talos Automation, we’re fortunate to work with engineers who turn chance into opportunity, and then into long-standing success. One such standout is André Campos, a seasoned contractor whose journey into the world of automation proves that sometimes, the best careers begin by accident.
Grant Horsham, André’s long-term Consultant and Associate Director at Talos, was curious to learn more about how it all began, what keeps him passionate, and what it’s like being a contractor on the move since 2017.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m just a guy from Porto who took an engineering course, and it opened the world to him.
How did you get into contracting, and what attracted you to it?
Pure luck, really. I wasn’t feeling valued in my previous job, so I quit, without another job lined up. I gave myself a deadline: if I didn’t find something I liked by the end of my notice period, I’d try contracting. That was back in 2017. Sometimes, the best things really happen by luck.
Why have you stayed in contracting rather than moving into a permanent role?
It’s simple: I like being responsible for my own work. Even when I’m part of a larger team; I’m representing myself, and that keeps me driven. Also, I’ve never lost the travel bug.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a long-term contractor?
It’s mostly about stability. Not having long-term contracts can make personal planning tricky. But once you get used to the rhythm of contracting, it becomes easier to manage. It teaches you to adapt quickly and make the most of every opportunity.
How many contracts have you worked on with Talos?
Honestly, I’ve lost count! I’ve been working with Talos since Spring 2018, and it’s been a steady stream of exciting projects since then.
Is there a project you’re particularly proud of?
Yes, the one I’m currently on! I hadn’t touched PLC programming in over three and a half years when I started, and the project itself was in a completely new field for me. Fast forward to now, and I’m one of the lead commissioners on site. I’ve even been able to share my knowledge and teach my colleagues, which has been incredibly rewarding.
How has your experience with Talos been over the years?
In a nutshell, smooth and reliable. Working with Talos – and with Grant in particular – has allowed me to focus entirely on my work. No cold calls, no chasing invoices, no client payment worries. Those small things might seem insignificant, but they really add up to peace of mind. And that peace of mind means I can do my best work.
Proudly moving forward
André’s journey is a powerful reminder that great careers aren’t always planned, they’re built, one project at a time. At Talos, we’re proud to support professionals like André, who bring integrity, curiosity and consistency to every job site.
