As part of our series on our longest-serving employees, we sat down with Matt Wells, who has been with Talos for eight years. From starting in a small corner of an open-plan office to playing a pivotal role in the company’s expansion, Matt’s journey is one of growth, ambition and strong teamwork. Here’s what he had to say about his experience at Talos.
The journey begins
How long have you been at Talos, and what first brought you here?
I’ve been at Talos for eight years. I was drawn in by the opportunity to earn good money and develop my skills in sales and negotiation.
What was Talos like when you first started? How has it evolved over the years?
When I started, there were just four of us, tucked away in a corner of an open-plan office. We worked hard and quickly grew the brand, eventually tripling our Net Fee Income (NFI) and expanding into our own office with a team of 22.
Can you share a standout memory from your time here?
One that stands out is from my first week when I had to source and onboard over 30 contractors for a major project in California. I had no idea what I was recruiting for at first, so I had to learn fast! It was a steep learning curve, but I managed to bill over £200k in my first eight months.
Why Talos?
What has kept you at Talos for so long?
The clients and candidates have been a big part of it, but mostly, it’s my colleagues. We have such a strong bond, and people who perform tend to stay. The leadership team has also played a huge role in my professional growth, taking me from a trainee to an Operations Manager.
What do you love most about working here?
The flexibility and trust we’re given are fantastic. The opportunity to earn a significant commission has also remained a constant over the years.
How has Talos supported your growth and career?
Early on, I expressed my ambition to move into a leadership role, and Talos fully supported me in that journey. I also pursued a part-time university degree in Business Leadership and Management, which I was able to complete while taking one day off per week from work.
Team culture
How would you describe the culture at Talos?
It’s a cliché, but we truly work hard and play hard. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we make sure to enjoy our day-to-day while delivering for our clients and candidates.
What’s one thing about the team here that makes it special?
We all understand the importance of performance, but what sets us apart is how much we genuinely care about each other. Everyone wants to see their teammates succeed, not just a select few.
If you had to sum up the Talos experience in three words, what would they be?
Kebabs, darts, teamwork – in that order!
Looking to the future
What excites you about the future of Talos?
We’ve already proven that we can triple the size of our business in just three years. Doing it again is a challenge I’m excited about. We’ve only scratched the surface of our industry, and the possibilities are endless.
With the new website launch, what’s one thing you’d want new visitors to know about the company?
That we truly value our candidates and clients—not just because they pay our fees, but because we genuinely learn from them and appreciate their input every day.
What advice would you give to someone just joining Talos today?
Strap yourselves in—it won’t be easy at first. You’ll need to work hard, develop your desk, and build your client base, which takes time. But if you trust the process and do the right things, you can achieve a level of success and financial reward that can transform your life.
